Design to Zero Competition Entry: Snowflake Complex

Our approach to the project evolved out two main points of interest, the given program and the possibility of iteration of a pattern that could be created according to the distribution of the required program and the kind of uncertainty of the Canadian climate. By working through several iterations of grid-like patterns we came across one that was quite rigid, but in its structure, we found the possibility of form that could change, grow or shrink under a set of circumstances that are, in themselves unpredictable and ever-changing. The final form came out of a process that was iterative in it self, evolving into three distinct modules that would fulfill the necessary programmatic requirements of a two person residence.

The next step in the process was to investigate the programmatic changes that take place within each residence and systematically formalize the existing geometry according to that logic.

Once all three residences were created, the plan and spatial organization, like the form itself would evolve out of an underlying structure that could be applied in a number of ways to achieve the most optimized solution to the problems of varied social demographic.

The initial grid that was used to create the final form and provide direction to the interior organization remains malleable and is thus transformable. The next transformation would come from exterior factors such as Canadian climate and position of the sun. The changes that take place at this stage are ones that will ultimately determine efficiency potential of the complex and perhaps most challenging when trying to intermingle the program and the various natural phenomena.
